2016 Mazda Prototype Winter Testing Day Two

Good Morning! While it did rain overnight and the skies were a flat grey at the 8AM start time, the track was basically dry and there wasn’t any more rain forecast until after the session. When I say mostly dry, there was some water in both T1 and T17, a few of the early risers found this out spinning in T1 and tank slappers in T17. Most of the cars stayed in the pits waiting for the track to dry up some, hoping other cars would take care of the standing water. After numerous red flags, the bulk of the field finally went out with around an hour left in the session. There was promptly another red flag. I could see a trend developing.

For test sessions, you cannot depend on any specific car to be on track when you expect them. You know you have to make sure everybody has the iconic shots, but just because you are in T1 and some of the cars are on the track, that doesn’t mean that ALL of the cars you need in T1 will be there. Trying to decide how long to stay and wait to make sure you have everyone covered in one spot while balancing making sure you have hots from multiple locations can be a bit of a head scratcher. For example, this morning I waited in T1 for quite a while to make sure I got a shot of a certain car. I finally gave up and headed to the pit lane to shoot it there (get something in the can whenever you can) and as I was about halfway back, he drove by me. Perfect. Then he went one lap and put it through the tire barrier. One down. There isn’t much else to talk about, I tried to cover most of the best areas, and look for a few new ones. Think I found a spot to try during the 12 Hours, we will see how that goes.

The WeatherTech SportsCar Championship cars are on track for the first time tomorrow.  I will drop you a line to let you see what happened.

Below is a selection of my favorite shots from the second day of testing.  Please comment and enjoy.
