2015 Petit Le Mans

Petit Le Mans is a 10 hour race. At 10 hours is the third longest race of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship. The week starts earlier than any other.  Some teams run testing on the Sunday prior to the race week. We are usually parked in the registration lot on Monday night as Lites testing is Tuesday morning early and Road Atlanta won’t let us into our RV spot until Tuesday morning. It rained Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, pretty constantly. This, as I have often mentioned, is more than fine by me, I think the photographic opportunities in the wet vastly outweigh those in the dry.  There are just so many more things happening: spray, rooster tails, splashing, rain in the headlights, power drifts, reflections. I could go on, but that’s enough commas don’t you think?

Wednesday morning was dry and sunny.  Nice blue skies with puffy clouds. The Tudor cars had their first ontrack practice. One of my main clients put their pro driver in the car.  He went out, did one complete lap and then hit the wall coming out of T1 and destroyed the car. Game.Over.Do.Not.Pass.Go Not an auspicious start to a long week. Then I received word that another client was being penalized by IMSA and would not be allowed to compete in the main race. Hmmm, things were definitely heading in the wrong direction.

Shooting the Cooper Lites kept me busy for the next few days and shooting night practice in a torrential downpour gave me a few of my favorite images of the season. Additionally, I picked up a last minute client that brought my spirits back up. Ok better. Then the car my pickup client was in hit a wall. My driver wasn’t in the car, but it was possibly terminal. A 24 hour thrashing on the composite work of the car, got it back in time for race day. During morning warm up, in the wet before the race, that car was again wrecked but the team was able to repair it for the start. It continued to rain in various levels of ferocity throughout the morning and into the afternoon.  By the time IMSA cancelled the race just before dark, all of my clients and/or their cars had crashed out of the race and a GT car had passed on track, all of the Prototypes and had taken the overall lead.

Hopefully, 2016 starts out better than 2015 ended.  See you at the track at Daytona for the ROAR!
